Withania Complex is an herbal formula with a wide spectrum of benefits on mood, adrenal and immune function and the nervous system. Specific benefit claims as made by the manufacturer Standard Process include tonic properties, maintaining feelings of wellbeing and relaxation, managing stress symptoms (irritability, agitation, etc), enhancing stamina in people of any age and helping the body adapt to everyday changes.

Withania Complex is designed for the use of adults. Special precautions refer to patients with high blood pressure, edema (water retention), congestive heart failure, low blood potassium, pregnancy and lactation. Also, the formula should be discontinued in case of acute infection or fever.

The product is included in the MediHerb line supplied by Standard Process, one of the three product lines available in the company’s portfolio. More than 300 products (dietary supplements, veterinary products and herbal solutions) are currently marketed worldwide.

Overview

1) Quick Overview

Withania Complex features a combination of four herbs: Ashwaganda, Licorice, Skullcap and Korean Ginseng.

Withania Somnifera or Ashwagandha is an ancient Indian herb used by Ayurvedic medicine practitioners to promote relaxation, the health of the immune function, and a healthy response to stress. Research has showed the plant has remarkable anti-anxiety and stress relieving properties, which account to its adaptogenic and antioxidant properties. Several research studies have linked Ashwagandha’s benefits to conditions such as post traumatic stress disorder, generalized anxiety disorder and panic attacks. The antioxidant properties of the herb may also make it efficient in the treatment and prevention of neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease. Clinical trials concluded that the herb can significantly reduce Cortisol levels (the hormone released in response to stress) of people affected by stress and showed that participants benefit from reduced fatigue, enhanced energy, better sleep, and an overall sense of well-being. Ashwagandha is considered safe for short periods of time; however side effects such as vomiting, stomach problems, and diarrhea may appear. The long term safety is not known.

The benefits of Korean Ginseng include stress management and enhancement of physical endurance. Additionally, the herb has antioxidant properties and may potentially benefit focus, concentration, and memory, however further scientific evidence to support these benefits is still required. Korean Ginseng may also help alleviate symptoms of anxiety disorders such as post-traumatic stress disorder and panic attacks. Korean Ginseng is generally well tolerated but side effects may appear (sadness, drowsiness, anxiety, and muscle spasms).

Verdict

6) Our Verdict on Withania Complex

Herbal alternative medicine has gained much popularity over the past few decades, with almost 20% of the U.S. population presumably choosing herbal medicine instead of traditional drugs to treat common illnesses. However, the dietary supplements sector remains poorly regulated. This leads to numerous safety concerns that may temper the decision to use these products. This is why we always advise you seek specialized advice before using dietary supplements of any kind.

Withania Complex features Ashwagandha and Korean Ginseng, two very popular herbs traditionally used to promote healthy immune function and nervous system health. They have been the topic of a large number of scientific researches, which investigated their benefits and side effects. The formula may work to accomplish its purpose, however the lack of consumer reviews or any other evidence makes it difficult to assess to what extent the formula is effective.

I took my first Withania supplement today and within 5 hrs I am experience flu like symptoms, diarrhea and head ache. My blood pressure which I treat with medication is also about 20 points elevated . Are my symptoms coincidental and unrelated to Withania or is there a possible reaction.

I have recently (with the support of my psychologist) stopped taking Prozac (low dose). This is a medicine that you must be careful to reduce or stop taking. With the help of my Standard Process rep (other doctor) I was able to find the Withania Complex to provide an herbal/natural balance when no longer taking the Prozac. In the 45 days since the switch, I had a few early days of feeling a little off and tired, but ever since the Withania I feel the same benefits I was getting with the Prozac but the bonus of feeling even better – I can only describe it as “feeling comfortable in my own skin” again – a bit more relaxed and more myself. My experience with Prozac left me a little too neutral in my mood, lost the good highs and lows in mood. I would give it 5 stars but it has not been long enough to fully judge. Regarding Standard Process – I feel great having taken for the past several years – their Catlayn (multi-vitamin) and several other supplements (tuna omega 3, D & B complexes, choline, fiber products, etc.) Great all natural products!
