Cylert (with generic form Pemoline) is a type of medication that is offered as a stimulant for the central nervous system; and one of the many ADD and ADHD drugs available at this moment. As of now, this drug has been discontinued by the manufacturer Abbott Laboratories. However, its generic form Pemoline is still being manufactured and prescribed.

This is a prescription medication, and it is not available for purchase without a doctor’s written permission.

Please note that this drug is not recommended (by either doctors or manufacturer) as the first treatment for ADHD or other medical conditions due to its severe side effects.

Apparently, the drug has been associated with life-threatening liver failure. Cylert is to be taken only when all other forms of treatment have failed.

Ingredients

1) Details on Cylert Ingredients and Uses

Cylert or Pemoline includes the following ingredients: Pemoline, corn starch, gelatin, lactose, magnesium hydroxide, polyethylene glycol, and talc.

2) Does Cylert Work?

Cylert is classified as CNS stimulant drug, and it has a different chemical structure from other amphetamines. However, experts are still unsure of the mechanics of this drug within the human body.

While scientists believe they know the end results of treatment with Cylert, they do not understand how these results come about, which is hugely concerning. Many parents may be reticent to put their child on a drug that has potentially unknown bodily interactions.

There are other options and treatments for ADHD for those concerned with this issue, and we recommend them to further research into this problem.

The primary target of this product is children that suffer from various behavioral and mental problems. According to the website, the use of Cylert daily can regulate the production of different brain chemicals.

As a result, children will have more self-control and a better attention span.

The dose of this drug depends on the child’s age, the weight of the child, the overall health, and the severity of the mental health or behavioral issues.

Usually, the first doses are low (about 5 mg per day), but the doctor may increase it if necessary.

There have been studies on animals that show the use of Cylert can trigger the production of serotonin and dopamine. However, there have been no clinical studies involving humans to verify if the same results would occur.

Like all other prescription drugs, this product has been associated with some side effects, including psychosis, hallucinations, seizures, suicidal thoughts, depression, insomnia, nausea, severe liver damage, and renal failure.

Price

3) Cylert Price

The brand name Cylert is no longer available for purchase, but generic form Pemoline is still being manufactured and prescribed.

The treatment with Pemoline can be quite expensive. It is essential to consult with your doctor before making a final decision. Some insurance companies may pay for this treatment. In case you can’t afford it, you should see your physician and find alternative therapies.

Verdict

4) Our Verdict on Cylert

The brand name Cylert is no longer available. According to the company, the lack of sales is the leading cause of discontinuation. However, many consumers believe that they stopped production due to the above-mentioned life-threatening associations.

We believe consumers should think twice before starting treatment with this drug. There are better and safer alternatives, even for the most severe cases of ADHD and ADD.

Since the generic form Pemoline is similarly comprised, it may be best to pass on that drug.
