St. John’s Wort 0.3% Hypericin is a simple one ingredient supplement which can be used to help with depression. It’s sold by California based company MRM Nutrition. They claim to have been established in 1996. They’re very nature-oriented; many of their products are certified vegan, gluten-free, organic, and made in a GMP facility. The company focuses on sports and health nutrition, offering a wide variety of supplements for many different needs. This product is a little different as it’s for improving mood, instead of enhancing fitness or improving nutrition.

Summary

1) What is St. John’s Wort?

St. John’ s Wort usually refers to Hypericum perforatum, but it can refer to any plant species of the Hypericum genus. Perforatum is used as an anti-depressant and for anti-inflammatory properties. You have to keep on eye on some supplement manufacturers who may not use Hypericum perforatum. Fortunately, MRM Nutrition does use it, so you might see its medicinal properties if you take this product. Each vegetarian capsule contains 450 mg of St. John’s Wort, with a standardized amount of 0.3 percent Hypericins. St. John’s Wort has other active ingredients but the label doesn’t show their amounts.

2) What Are St. John’s Wort Ingredients?

St. John’s Wort 0.3% Hypericin contains the following ingredients: John’s Wort (450 mg).

St. John’s Wort is often found in more complex mood enhancing formulas. If interested, you can check out our Lumiday review.

3) Does St. John’s Wort Work?

Each vegetarian capsule contains 450 mg of St. John’s Wort, with a standardized amount of the ingredient Hypericins. St. John’s Wort, usually in the form of Hypericum perforatum, is a popular herb. Its active components Hypericin and Hyperforin can work to increase dopamine and thus have anti-depressant effects. It’s not clear how much of each active ingredient is in this product, aside from the 0.3 percent hypericins. St. John’s Wort has a number of substances which provide benefits. Scientific formulations often use 0.3 percent hypericin and 0.6 percent pseudohypericin per 300 mg of St. John’s Wort.

The research on St. John’s Wort shows that it’s helpful for depression, but studies can’t agree on the best applications, or if it improves mood in healthy people. People with mild, moderate, or severe depression can try St. John’s Wort. It is, however, discouraged for people with bipolar disorder. It can minimize the depressive effects through dopamine, but may increase the risk of experiencing mania. St. John’s Wort also contains the enzyme CYP3A4, which is used by a significant number of pharmaceuticals. Some people can’t take this nootropic with certain medicines or other things (such as birth control).

5) St. John’s Wort Warnings and Precautions

Price

6) St. John’s Wort Price

The label recommends taking 1 to 2 capsules a day, with meals. Since each bottle has 60 capsules, it’s a pretty good deal. Even if this supplement only lasts you a month, it remains inexpensive. MRM offers free shipping through their website, but only for orders over $100. For certain products, they offer sample kits. The three types of kits are technically free but you have to pay a slightly inflated shipping cost. Each kit contains 7 to 10 samples of various products sold by MRM. A sample of the St. John’s Wort is unnecessary because it’s already so cheap.

Suggested Use

7) Suggested Use

This is a popular nootropic which has been used for hundreds of years in traditional medicine. The true benefits are still being explored. Although studies show that it can be very effective, they sometimes disagree on how effective, and what all the benefits are. In modern times St. John’s Wort is usually used to help treat symptoms of mild or moderate depression. In some cases, it’s equally beneficial as anti-depressant medicine, and for some people it’s the better option. Clinical trials use 300 mg of St. John’s Wort three times a day, for a total of 900 mg. Taking two capsules of this MRM Nutrition product daily will give you 900 mg of St. John’s Wort.

Bottom Line

8) Our Bottom Line

St. John’s Wort can work as an effective anti-depressant for some people. Studies have found that it can be more effective than some pharmaceutical anti-depressants, although St. John’s Wort doesn’t work for some people. For them, they need the pharmaceutical anti-depressants. But if you suffer from depression, have a talk with a medical professional. St. John’s Wort might be a safe and healthy way to combat your problems. This supplement from MRM Nutrition could be a good source of St. John’s Wort.
